Switch off the Lights to Brighten the Future

In December 2018, the UN climate summit (COP24) kicked off in Katowice, Poland, where world leaders and negotiators from almost 200 nations gathered to negotiate how to tackle climate change and to work on the implementation plan for the Paris Agreement. Climate change is a problem that is happening here and now, not in the future. Its impact is felt across ecosystems, which are being destroyed at an alarming rate. Climate change is the most important issue humanity faces and the UN urges nations to tackle the urgent threats of global warming. What can we do as global citizens? We can change our lifestyles.

We are not alone against climate change

Climate change is a global concern. Having hosted Earth Hour Taiwan for 9 years, O’right is no stranger to sustainability. O’right Poland distributors as well as this year’s Earth Hour partner Taiwan Youth Climate Coalition (TWYCC) travelled 800km to join thousands in the march for the climate on the streets of Katowice. “When we go together, we can go very far,” TWYCC said, while expressing their goal of promoting the creativity of the march to Taiwan to inspire more people to walk the journey together. We are not alone on this journey against climate change. As the European Union (EU) plans to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, we are following closely on the heels of environmental concerns in hopes of transitioning to a zero carbon economy.

Now is not too late to fight

COP24 climate talk was not the end of the matter; it is the beginning of great change. Since 2011, O’right has partnered with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to make Earth Hour Taiwan possible every year by bringing together industry leaders and celebrities and has succeeded in reducing 340,730kg of carbon emissions, equal to planting 30,976 20-year-old trees on earth. Earth Hour is a global initiative that unites people across the globe to raise awareness of the fight against climate change and to protect the earth. It has grown to become the world’s largest movement for the environment, with 188 countries and territories worldwide joining and 18,000 landmarks switching off their lights to take a stand to change climate change.

“We’ve started our new campaign to raise the profile of the importance of biodiversity and nature, building a compelling narrative on why nature is fundamental to our well-being, health, happiness, society and economy. It is about connecting to earth and it is about learning to live in harmony with nature. Perhaps most of all, it’s about securing the future of earth’s amazing diversity of life and our own. We can secure a healthy planet for all if we join forces and voices,” Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International asserted.
