In the summer of 2022, temperatures in Greenland spiked to around 30 degrees Celsius, the warmest on record. Climate advocate and ESG company O’right initiated the Melting Greenland project, and brought the team (consisting of United Daily News and Vision Project) to Greenland in hopes of seeing the impacts of climate change up close. Never did the team imagine finding a broken television set (Made in Taiwan, no less) amidst the marine debris. The “waste in question” traveled back with the team all the way to Taiwan and is now being put on display at O’right’s newly curated Melting Greenland exhibition at its Environmental Education Hall.

Seeing gray hair sprout out of your scalp? Are you a victim of premature graying, and can’t figure out why? The campaign for World Environment Day 2022 #OnlyOneEarth calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet. Every minute, the equivalent of one garbage truck of plastic is dumped into our ocean. Plastic pollution is our global problem. Approximately 7 billion of the 9.2 billion tonnes of plastic produced from 1950-2017 became plastic waste, ending up in landfills or dumped, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). In Taiwan, only mono-material plastic can be circulated back into the recycling system. The refill packs or flexible packaging commonly found in stores are generally made from mixed materials (i.e., a combination of plastic materials), and some even contain non-recyclable metal films, posing a serious circularity challenge.
The term ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) was first coined in 2005, but Taiwanese-based beauty brand O’right began implementing ESG and focusing on these issues since embarking on its green journey in 2002. Formerly known as the Global Views Monthly (GVM) CSR Award, the CSR-ESG Award fosters the transition to sustainability and incorporates environmental concerns into risk assessment, demonstrating that businesses are doing more than just pursuing profits; companies are taking real action and being socially and environmentally accountable to their business, stakeholders and the society.
