Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s dema […]

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources in a given year exceeds what earth can generate in that year. In 2019, Earth Overshoot Day landed on July 29, meaning that for the next five months that year, we had to borrow the earth’s future resources to operate our economies in the present. Ultimately human activity will be brought in balance with earth’s resources, whether we choose to achieve it by disaster or design. So, as we come face to face with the ecological imbalance and disaster unfolding before us, the question is: how do we overturn adversity with design?

We are stripping the earth of its natural resources at a rate much faster than earth can generate. Earth Overshoot Day comes earlier and earlier every year. So how should we move the date by design rather than by disaster? 2020 Circular Design Exhibition revolves around six themes: food, fashion/textile, housing/objects, electronics/appliances, plastics/packaging and cities, using intuitive graphics to reveal the cost we have paid for the comforts we have enjoyed and the innovations certain sectors have created through design. The exhibition designed a framework for a future living model in the next decade to show visitors just how circular design can shape a brand new lifestyle.

From picking up food that would otherwise be dumped and turning it into a dish that is a visual and gustatory feast, designing circular garments that can be worn 46 days in a row without smelling, 100% recyclable and reusable glass straws to PaperLab, a system powered by Dry Fiber Technology that turns used paper into new paper, 2020 Circular Design Exhibition features 40 circular design pieces from 32 companies across the globe to show visitors how design works and how it can bring new life into a world that is constantly changing. Unlike other exhibitions, this exhibition uses recyclable, renewable and reusable materials; for example, the display shelves and tables are made from textile waste and the stand is made from renewable mesh fabric instead of foam board. The ultimate goal of a circular economy is to design out waste and make zero waste a reality.

This year Earth Hour took place on March 28 from […]

This year Earth Hour took place on March 28 from 8:30 to 9:30pm local time. As one of the first open-source climate change campaigns, it has grown from a symbolic lights out event in Australia’s Sydney in 2007 to one of the world’s largest grassroots environmental movements spanning over 7000 cities and 180 countries and territories.

Many countries are currently facing a health crisis with the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). In the midst of this pandemic, the world needs to stand together now more than ever to safeguard our future and the future of our planet. Earth Hour 2020 is more than just a symbolic event, but a global environmental movement that focuses its efforts on instilling global urgency for nature and biodiversity conservation and recognizing nature as a key solution to climate change.

But what exactly does nature give us? Because nature is free, people often take it for granted. Nature is the one thing that underpins our future and our very existence on the planet. It gives us the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat. Oceans and coral reefs provide food and livelihoods to hundreds of millions of people. Forests clean the air, regulate the local climate and retain water for rivers. Healthy soils are essential for growing crops. Mountains and glaciers are key sources of water for major rivers. The benefits of nature are estimated to be worth US$ 125 trillion per year, which is double the world’s GDP. But not many people currently understand the vital importance of nature – and the huge threat it faces. Recent WWF research in the world’s most biodiverse countries shows that only 40% of people associate the benefits of biodiversity and nature with necessities of life such as food, water and fresh air.

For many, climate change feels like a faraway scientific problem that has nothing to do with them. People who live in cities may only experience nature on the screen of their cell phone and remain disconnected and unaware of how nature is impacting and underpinning their lives. The economic, social and environmental importance of nature and a healthy climate is often undervalued. As global biodiversity declines at an alarming and unprecedented rate, with up to one million species threatened with extinction, coupled with the ever-present challenge of climate change, now is not the time to ignore the warnings. This must change.

Since 2007, Earth Hour has mobilized millions of people around the world to encourage action to protect our planet, including:

√Successfully calling for new legislation for the protection of forests in Russia in 2013.

√Mobilizing public support for the creation of a 3.5 million hectare marine-protected area in Argentina.

√Creating a 2700 hectare Earth Hour forest in Uganda.

√Planting 17 million trees in Kazakhstan.

√French Polynesia successfully moved to protect 5 million square kilometers of its seas to protect ocean ecosystems.

√WWF Ecuador advocated for a ban on the use of single-use plastic bags and Styrofoam products in the capital in 2019.

√WWF Indonesia initiated the planting of 20 thousand mangrove seedlings in 13 cities.

2020 is a critical year. This is the year in which world leaders will take key decisions on the future direction on the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). These decisions will affect our own futures and the state of our planet for decades to come. Earth Hour is just the beginning. The moment the world comes together to tackle climate change is when we are making a real difference to save planet earth.

Earth offers a limitless supply of natural resources fo […]

Earth offers a limitless supply of natural resources for us to use. But has anyone stopped to wonder if the earth’s resources will eventually run out one day? Will humanity use up the planet’s allowance of natural resources? According to international research organization Global Footprint Network, Earth Overshoot Day lands on July 29th this year, the earliest ever, alerting the world about the alarming condition of our environment. As nations around the world fights for our planet, 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg started a school strike for the climate last August, soon inspiring millions of other children in cities around the world began following suit. They are fighting for their future and the future of the planet.

Moving the date to preserve earth’s natural resources

In 2018, humanity used up nature’s resource budget for the entire year, according to Global Footprint Network. Despite countless action steps and solutions to move the date back, this year’s July 29th still marked the earliest every Earth Overshoot Day, meaning that humanity has consumed a year’s worth of carbon, water, food, land and timber in a record of 210 days – meaning that we would need 1.7 earths to accommodate our current consumption levels.

Humanity has been exhausting a year’s worth of natural resources for many years now

There are no borders or age restrictions when it comes to changing climate change. Global Footprint Network provided solutions and actions that we can take to move the date. For instance, replacing 50% of meat consumption with vegetarian food can move the date back 3 days and according to an analysis by researchers from Global Footprint Network and Schneider Electric, existing off-the-shelf, commercial technologies for buildings, industrial processes and electricity production could move Overshoot Day by at least 21 days. What’s more, reducing the carbon component of the global ecological footprint by 50% could move the date 3 whole months. Moving the date of Earth Overshoot Day is possible and necessary to warn the world of the seriousness of climate change.

Climate change is changing people’s lives. We should tackle this problem in order to protect the earth.

Students fight for their future

An IPCC Special Report shocked many with the prediction that we have only 11 years left to avert the climate change catastrophe before the world is hit by extreme drought, forest fires, floods and famine. Eleven years from now is the time when young people are at the peak of their lives; they will be at an age where they can accomplish greatness. Instead, they will be left to cope with the results and carry this burden. Earth Overshoot Day is getting earlier each year, and Greta Thunberg is making sure that her voice is heard. Last August, the young teenager captured the attention of the world when she skipped school, sat down outside the Swedish parliament with a handwritten sign and determination to fight for the environment and to push the government in line with a 1.5℃ world. The school strike leader spoke for her generation at the COP24 summit. “We children are doing this because we want our hopes and dreams back,” Greta said, emphasizing the urgency of this issue.

Young students speak up for their future and bravely face the challenges of climate change

Green actions: Making a monumental difference

O’right believes that small changes can make a monumental difference. Since 2009, we have committed to taking eco-friendly actions and making sustainable choices in order to lessen our burden on the planet and reduce our carbon footprint, including banning single-use plastic packaging, reducing plastic use, planting trees, CSR initiatives as well as making our raw materials, packaging, electricity, logistics and services as green as possible.

Green impact: Sowing green seeds

Many years of low carbon initiatives and commitment to sustainability has created a cumulative effect. This year, we teamed up with the Taiwan Youth Climate Coalition (TWYCC) in hopes of spreading green knowledge on the environment and climate and raising awareness among elementary, junior and senior high school students. We should all speak up for earth and create a more sustainable future together.

Forest restoration can be traced back to as early as th […]

Forest restoration can be traced back to as early as the 1980s, where various sectors began to show concern for biodiversity issues. However, making forest restoration a common goal requires years and years of efforts. It wasn’t until in 2015 that the United Nations embedded biodiversity into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which many world leaders have adopted and are implementing.

Forests are the key to maintaining biodiversity

On a rainy afternoon in May, we took a trip to Dadu Mountain in Taichung. The air smelled like soil and the forest. Basking in the glory of nature, the Executive Director of the Taiwan Reforestation Association Tsai Chih-hao asked us, “Do you know what biodiversity means?” When it comes to biodiversity, the more doesn’t necessarily mean the better. Only native species contribute to regional biodiversity. The environment and climate vary from once place to another, meaning the species of one place are naturally different to those of another. Despite being situated at an altitude similar to that of Linkou and Yangmingshan, they differ greatly in the biodiversity of species. The same can be said for Taiwan and the Amazon River, which is known for its rich biodiversity.

Walking into the woods allow people to reflect on the deforestation issue and the actions that can be taken

Each species has a key role in the ecosystem, which is the glue that helps maintain a good ecological balance. Tsai Chih-hao gave an example: a big tree can provide shade to plants, which can serve as food for other living species; during this process, the seeds may be moved to another area where they will sprout new life.

We protect biodiversity to maintain ecological balance. Since its establishment 4 years ago, the Taiwan Reforestation Association has been dedicated to using their professional knowledge in the academic field to protect the forests and improve ecological well-being through the government and public.

Restoring Dadu’s forests

As we walked further into the forests, we saw new trees sprouting from the soil, which are part of the Taiwan Reforestation Association’s restoration plan. For the past decade, old-growth forests of Dadu Mountain have been facing major threats due to poor forest management logging. Statistics show that Dadu Mountain is currently home to approximately 30 species; however, when Tsai Chih-hao was going through the specimen records of the Japanese rule period, he found that there once were 80 species of old-growth trees native to Dadu Mountain. Then, comparing Dadu to the neighboring forests, he deduced that Dadu should actually be home to up to 112 old-growth tree species, meaning that nearly 80% of tree species have vanished since then.

The Taiwan Reforestation Association initiated a restoration plan for Dadu forests

Forests are disappearing, but how will it affect us? Dadu Mountain, for instance, is the lung of Taiwan, providing us with clean and pure air to breathe and increasing soil’s ability to retain water. Forests help maintain ecological balance and play a major role in climate change mitigation.

In April, the Taiwan Reforestation Association lead a team including governmental and non-governmental organizations to Dadu Mountain and planted 300 seedlings of 60 species as the start of the restoration plan. When the trees grow, other plants and organisms can also grow under its protection, thus contributing to the biodiversity of the land. “We are all connected on this earth. Protecting the forests is a way of life for us, the people who live on earth,” Tsai Chih-hao said.

Co-existing with nature

Dadu Mountain is not the only place that is undergoing change. An indigenous Rukai couple from Pingtung County in the southern part of Taiwan, Sula Sukimadimi and his wife have dedicated themselves to restore forest land. Due to their affection for and connection with this piece of land, they know where each species belong. “We may not know a lot, but we know trees; we have an intuition when it comes to planting trees,” the couple said. They insist on planting trees in the ground they originally grew from because they grew up learning to protect trees and live in harmony with nature. The fruits they grow from the trees can be harvested by their people or eaten by animals. When Rukai people hunt for wild animals, they do so without impacting the food chain. They believe that as people co-existing with nature they have the obligation to do the right thing.

Old-growth trees can provide shelter to plants

Forest conservation and ecological concepts are gaining attention worldwide. The Brazilian government introduced the Action Plan for Deforestation Prevention and Control in the Legal Amazon (PPCDAm), an environmental policy to reduce deforestation in the Amazon forest by integrating action across different government institutions and implementing monitoring activities. The government designated several protected areas in the Amazon and blacklisting municipalities with critical rates or deforestation (the “federal blacklist”). Their efforts which significantly contributed to the decrease of deforestation rates have been acknowledged around the world and hope to raise awareness on deforestation.

Sustainability and circular economy were the central themes of Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna 2019, focusing on the environmental impact made by the cosmetics industry and leading to new directives in terms of the use of sources of renewable energy, limiting product waste and recycling and reusing scrap materials. CosmoTalks came back for the third year at Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna since introducing an educational format for creativity, inspiration and business in 2017. Leading Taiwanese beauty brand O’right was welcomed for the second time as one of the most iconic sustainable brands in the industry to interact with international companies in the beauty sector brought together to explore the newest trends, beauty innovations and technologies.

Staying true to our roots in sustainability

Our core values of Green, Sustainability and Innovation that set us apart from the competition guide our commitment to make sustainability possible. From delivering the Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, to joining RE100 with a commitment to use 100% renewable electricity by 2025, we are leading the industry as the world’s first zero carbon beauty brand dedicated to finding more sustainable solutions for consumers and planet earth. During the last session of CosmoTalks, O’right Chairman Steven Ko was asked to share his vision of the future of beauty, to which he replied: “If the beauty industry does not make sustainability a priority, then they will disappear by 2040. This isn’t losing the fight against competitors, but the fight against global trends.” It’s not just the beauty sector that needs to wake up. According to the IPCC climate report, urgent and unprecedented changes are needed by global sectors in order for the world to become carbon neutral. “Stopping climate change is not something that can be done by just one company alone; global collective action is needed,” Steven Ko firmly added. Motivating and inspiring people to act on sustainability is our goal and a challenge we must all accept and overcome.

Leading the beauty industry to a zero carbon future

Our booth design at Cosmoprof Bologna was a reflection of our company’s values, mission and what sets us apart from the competition – our zero carbon concept. We created not just an exhibit, but experiences that connect us with the audience to tell our story and our vision of a greener tomorrow. A salon hairdresser from Austria who had just witnessed the Fridays for Future movement on the day of the exhibition said upon visiting our booth: “Students from more than 100 countries worldwide are skipping class to protest government inaction on climate change; O’right is the only company at Cosmoprof that is shifting towards a zero carbon world.” Our Cosmoprof booth created an interactive and immersive experience that not only drew attention but also raised awareness of climate change.

As a green brand, it is important that our booth design reflects our commitment to giving consumers Natural, Pure and Eco-friendly products that bring out your natural beauty. The space displaying our skin care line boasts natural elements of greenery to emphasize our green philosophy, green ingredients and green packaging – all things green. We believe that beauty goes beyond the surface and we put our values at the heart of our products with naturally-sourced, farm-to-beauty ingredients native to Taiwan and 100% renewable plastic shampoo bottles.

As climate change continues to have a major impact on the natural environment, sustainable development is becoming a common goal for nations worldwide. By 2030, global carbon dioxide emissions must be 45% less. What’s more, businesses and governments must come together and unite our power for stronger and more effective climate action. It’s time for everyone to step up to the climate challenge and move towards a greener tomorrow.

Desertification, drought, water scarcity and air pollut […]

Desertification, drought, water scarcity and air pollution are just a few of the global environmental problems facing humanity, and our skin. The conventional way of skin care is no longer enough to eliminate the environment’s impact on the skin. A green, zero carbon skin care solution that caters to different age groups, parts of the body and skin types is the key to ensuring that we are not only kind to our skin, but also kind to the earth.

Cleansing: the first step to healthy skin

First, let’s ponder thee questions: How often do we wash our hands? Do we wash our hands before bathing our baby? Can we wash away all the dirt and grime on our hands with clean water after a day out? Particulate matter such as dust, soot and other finer particles such as PM2.5 that float around our environment can be the culprit contributing to unhealthy skin. Cleansing correctly is the first step to healthy, beautiful skin.

The skin is our body’s largest organ. It plays a crucial role in working as an effective waterproof barrier between the outside world, protecting the things inside the body from microbes and environmental aggressors. Skin on different parts of the body and in different ages is treated and cleansed differently. Experience a skin care routine catered to individual types.

Catering to every need

Choosing the right skin care routine for our skin is essential.

By age

Skin in different ages display different properties. Infants aged 0-3 years old have delicate, fragile skin that is different from adults in structure; they have sensitive skin, which makes them more likely than adults to develop a rash or dryness. Children aged over 3 become more energetic and therefore require a more thorough cleanse. Adult skin, fully developed, has a thicker stratum corneum and an increased production of sebum; they need products that offer heavier-duty cleansing.

By skin

There are different skin care products for different parts of the body, namely the scalp, facial skin, body and hands. The scalp and body skin produce more sebum, which tend to clog pores. For the scalp, we can use shampoo followed with scalp balancing products for a thorough cleanse. For the body, we can use body wash with a bath sponge or other bath products. Facial skin is thinner than the skin of the body and more sensitive; since facial skin is exposed to external stressors all day, it needs a gentler cleanse to keep it healthy. Hands produce less oil, but is washed the most often during the day; thus, they require moisturizing and milder products.

By type

External factors, age and genes affect the kind of skin we have. Skin types can be categorized into combination, dry, oily and sensitive. Combination skin can be cleansed with the average face wash we find in stores. Dry skin needs products with moisturizing properties. Oily skin can be washed with a stronger face wash to control oil production. Sensitive skin should be cared for with gentle, milder cleansers followed with soothing or hydrating products.

O’right’s Green Tea Shampoo and Body Wash are consumer favorites due to their scalp and skin cleansing benefits. To provide consumers with a wider range of products, we introduced the Shikakai Purifying Foaming Hand Wash and Mallow Baby Shampoo & Wash Mousse.

Shikakai Purifying Foaming Hand Wash is infused with active plant extracts such as shikakai to soothe while it cleanses, leaving hands soft and lightly scented. Mallow Baby Shampoo & Wash Mousse is made for baby’s delicate skin and hair, specially infused with organic mallow for gentle cleansing, moisturizing and nourishing. Designed to gently pamper the skin and create a wonderful cleansing experience, the two new mousse products work into a creamy, rich lather to soften and moisturize the skin. The easy-rinse formula makes them more water- and energy-efficient.

Our choice, our planet

Small steps can lead to big changes in the environment. Take action by buying low carbon green beauty products to show we care for the planet. Our skin and our planet deserves the best care we can offer.

In October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate […]

In October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5ºC, which estimates that the world’s temperatures are likely to raise 0.5ºC between 2030 and 2052. At the COP24 (the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), countries teamed up to make a carbon-neutral world possible by 2050. Climate change does not just pose a threat to the environment, but humanity as a whole. We can’t help but wonder, if one day grass stops growing, the oceans are overflowing with trash and extreme weather hits every corner of earth…what can we do to stop this from happening?

Recently, the European Parliament voted to enact a ban on single-use plastics by 2021. Winners of the 2018 Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences were recognized for their work in the connection between climate change and economic activity. It’s a delight to see more and more people following these green footsteps in hopes of making a difference for a greener tomorrow.

For O’right, being a good enterprise is more important than being a big one. As a green enterprise, we are constantly thinking of ways to lessen environmental impact. Over the course of 16 years, our commitment to earth and consumers has never changed, and it can be seen in our efforts in keeping trash away from the oceans and making good use of used plastic. We encourage everyone to follow our footsteps and change your lifestyle for the better. Small steps can lead to big changes in the environment, and it can be done in everyday life. Collective action can create a bigger power. We should all step up and give our children a clean and healthy planet.

In 2018, we introduced the 100% renewable plastic shampoo bottle and launched the world’s first renewable plastic shampoo pump during the European Innovation Week. We continue to take the lead on sustainability by reducing single-use plastic and protecting the environment and oceans from unwanted pollution. Our green actions on packaging helps reduce carbon emissions by 80%, surpassing the goal set at the UN climate summit that took place in Paris and completing a new milestone in sustainability. The prestigious 2018 Green World Awards recognized us for our commitment to sustainability and awarded us in the Carbon Reduction category.

In this edition of It’s O’right, we stay true to our green roots and explore topics such as disposable plastic packaging, green hotels and global trends in the regeneration of resources. The good news is that sustainability is a growing global trend. 2018 has been an exciting year. Not only did we launch a brand new skin care line, we also celebrated the opening of the first overseas O’right Concept Store at Saudi Arabia to pamper female customers from the scalp to skin. Going forward, we will continue to make a difference and discover the limitless possibilities on earth.

Climate change has hit the world hard. The Middle East, […]

Climate change has hit the world hard. The Middle East, one of the driest regions on earth, is particularly vulnerable to the changing environment. Extreme climate conditions and water shortage pose a growing threat and governments are relying on desalination for freshwater. This predicament causes them to be more eco-conscious and focus on taking more sustainable approaches in terms of natural resources.

Sprouting green seeds in Saudi Arabia

The Middle East, in particular Saudi Arabia, is witnessing a green trend with consumers displaying an increased preference for eco-friendly products with natural ingredients.

However, along with this growth also came a flood of natural beauty products. O’right distributor of Saudi Arabia Waleed says, “So many brands claim to be natural and organic, but there isn’t one that can truly benefit the health of my family.”

During his visit to Taiwan, Waleed was impressed by the unique spatial and product design of O’right Concept Store. He truly believes that O’right can make a difference and lead people towards a greener lifestyle as a brand.

In October, the first O’right Concept Store was opened in Riyadh Gallery Mall of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. As a brand that promotes a vision of a green lifestyle, O’right Concept Store is decorated with wood elements and greenery and features walls without paint, LED lighting and O’right’s innovative water-saving faucets controlled by foot pedals. A water recycling mechanism allows used tap water to be drained and reused as water for flowering plants.

A space designed for custom scalp care services

An ongoing journey

The O’right Concept Store Saudi Arabia had to overcome many cultural and trivial challenges in order to create the perfect atmosphere and retail experience for consumers. Since its opening, the store has gotten many positive reviews. “Seeing how happy customers become after finding the product for them…I knew that the time and effort we invested into this store was all worth it. We did it!” Waleed got emotional while sharing his thoughts.

Waleed also plans to open more O’right Concept Stores in Saudi Arabia in hopes of welcoming more people to join our green journey and spreading more green seeds throughout Saudi Arabia.

Live a Green Lifestyle “Orbiting Earth in the spaceship […]

Live a Green Lifestyle

“Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it!” – Yuri Gagarin

Technology has changed our lives, our culture and even our environment. People are focusing more on spiritual and material life, resulting in high productivity and consumption. From a gorgeously packaged gift, fast fashion clothing to your travel carbon footprint, our buying behavior impacts the environment. So, the question is: how to preserve the natural beauty of our planet while pursuing our beauty and convenience? How do we achieve a balance between the two?

The oceans cover about 70% of the earth’s surface and is the place where most of the earth’s pollution end up in, most of it being plastic. Plastic is everywhere, from packaging materials, daily essentials, clothing, building materials to mechanical components. We depend on plastic, for the convenience it provides in life. How can we enjoy the advantages plastic bring while mitigating its’ environmental impact? According to the UN, only 9% of the amount of plastic produced on earth is being recycled. The majority of it are either buried or just discarded. Plastic reduction is not the only thing trending nowadays; the topic of renewable plastic materials has also become an international focus. Plastics may have a hard time decomposing, but it can be reused. All we have to do is to reduce the use of disposable plastics and make sure we recycle properly. Then, these plastics can emerge with a brand new appearance, ready to be reused. Not only does this help to reduce waste generation, but also to lessen the amount of carbon emissions produced in the process, further fulfilling the Cradle to Cradle requirements.

Strip off excess packaging and go naked

Disposable plastic goods are one of the main reasons plastic waste keep on piling up. Looking at the enormous amount of plastic packaging waste produced, don’t you ever wonder if we really need all that packaging? Following recent ongoing global efforts to end plastic pollution and reduce plastic waste, the world is beginning to pick up on the naked packaging (i.e., packaging-free) trend. Do away with the luxury packaging and restore products to its original nude self. Buying less is also another way to prevent unnecessary waste. There may still be a long way to go before we achieve the vision for zero packaging, we can still take one small step at a time and be the change we wish to see in the world. Earth can be better, as long as we do something.

Turning over a new leaf in fashion

The environmental costs of the apparel and textile industry shouldn’t be ignored either. Fast fashion is a disaster for the environment and a crisis in our closets. These clothes are produced on a mass scale and sold at cheap prices. What most people don’t know is that the manufacturing and dyeing of fabrics are chemically intensive and the microplastics from polyester clothing made of synthetic materials pollutes the ocean. That’s not all; every time these clothes are washed, thousands of plastic microfibers accumulate in waterways.

This is the true cost of fast fashion, and the earth is hurting. Many well-known clothing brands and designers have stepped up to tackle the problem and take a step toward sustainability by taking a greener approach, using recycled or sustainably sourced materials to manufacture clothes. As far as the fashion industry goes, green is becoming the new black.

The beginning of change

We should go beyond the slogans on the environment and take immediate action. We can start by changing our buying habits and lifestyles, from using less plastic bags, buying less polyester clothing, saying no to luxury packaging to choosing green, eco-friendly products. These small simple steps in our everyday life can build up to greatness. It’s never too late to do something and make a difference. It is possible; the oceans can become clean again and earth can be beautiful once more.

Nowadays, “green” is everywhere. It is a social respons […]

Nowadays, “green” is everywhere. It is a social responsibility and it has become an integral part of our lives.

Protecting the planet shouldn’t just be a slogan people say or words you see. It is an action that should be taken. Switch off unnecessary lights, bring your own shopping bag and take public transportation are just a few of the “green” things you can do in your daily life. Now, let’s take green to a different level: in the form of a vacation.

Traveling can mean different things for people. Traveling can bring people closer together. For some, it is a great way to relax and relive stress; for others, it gives them the opportunity to get in touch with themselves.

Delicious food and breathtaking scenery are not the only elements that make for an unforgettable trip. A great hotel also plays an important role in a trip. When choosing a hotel to stay at, most people prefer to spend money on hotels that provide excellent service, amenities, convenience and comfort. All they have to bring aside from their luggage is a relaxed mood.

However, while you’re enjoying the convenience your hotel brings, have you ever thought about how much carbon dioxide and trash is generated in the process? According to online statistics, the amount of trash a traveler produces is 2-3 times more than that produced at home on average. When we travel, we opt for the most convenient options, because it’s easy to prioritize ease and comfort. But we’re forgetting about the environmental impact of it all.

As we see a shift towards sustainability happening worldwide, the hospitality industry have also started to pick up on this green trend. Promisedland Resort & Lagoon (Hualien) and Book Inn (Tainan) share their experience of going green and making a difference.

The significance of sustainability in the hospitality industry

“A hotel is not like a factory or a house, it is a public space where people gather,” General Manager of Promisedland Resort & Lagoon, Jerry Kang said. “The hospitality industry has been around for decades, meaning that we have been taking from the environment for years as well. Every year when guests visit and stay at our hotel and enjoy the services we provide, it always results in alarmingly high levels of energy and plastic waste consumption. The truth is, we can incorporate sustainability into our actions. If the hotel industry can pick up on this green trend, we can give back to the environment.”

“Book Inn wasn’t originally founded as an eco hotel,” Manager of Book Inn Emily Zhuang recalled. “It was the current environment and the rise of the sustainability trend that inspired us to not only offer guests a living space but also to give our environment the clean and healthy home it deserves. Located in an ancient area in Tainan, Book Inn uses furnishing made from old materials to preserve the vintage style of used items while giving them new life.”

Infusing green into hotels

Jerry: When Promisedland promotes eco-friendly practices, we think of ways to reuse things. Amenities create a huge amount of trash in the hotel industry. To solve this problem, we use O’right shampoo, conditioner and body wash contained in their Eco Dispenser, which is made from renewable plastic materials to reduce waste and offer guests a natural, eco-friendly bath experience.

That’s not all. Instead of bottled water in every room, Promisedland offers water filter pitchers. We also use harvested rainwater and reclaimed water to water our gardens and greenery. What’s more, recently we began working with nearby farms to provide fresh foods and reduce shipping carbon footprint.

To achieve more sustainability goals, Promisedland also encourages staff to take action and adjust their old habits and live a more sustainable lifestyle. That way, they can make more of a difference on every guest.

Emily: You won’t find much disposable materials at Book Inn. We encourage our guests to bring their own toothbrush and toothpaste. Book Inn guests can enjoy our top quality selection of bedding, shampoo and body wash and personal care products. We believe that taking a guest-centric approach is the best way to attract happy customers and receive happy reviews.

I visited O’right Green Headquarters once, and found that I was on the same page as O’right in terms of sustainability, thus beginning our partnership with the green brand. After adding bath amenities by O’right, hotel guests can enjoy the green experience offered by O’right and Book Inn.

Book Inn is the perfect option for backpackers who are traveling to Tainan. We interact with them and share eco-friendly items such as recyclable toothbrush made from corn starch. It’s not just a marketing approach, but also a means of educating guests on their choices to benefit themselves and earth.

The beginning of a promising future

The environmental impact from staying in hotels is quite astounding, as most people used to think. Although it seems like small steps, the green actions of Promisedland Resort & Lagoon and Book Inn are the beginning of a promising future. Guests staying at the hotels can be brought closer to a sustainable lifestyle, igniting the power within them to make a difference.
